Description

Drivers turning right onto Lake Merritt Blvd from eastbound 11th Street routinely run the red arrow signal at this intersection. This is likely due at least in part to the highway on-ramp like nature of this portion of 11th Street. But I would guess that many of these drivers simply do not realize that it is illegal to turn right on a red arrow.

This creates an extremely hazardous situation for pedestrians trying to cross 11th Street using the crosswalk at this intersection. Most of the red arrow runners here are concerned only with making sure that they are not hit by traffic already on Lake Merritt Blvd. I have been in the crosswalk many times when these red light runners do not seem to notice my presence. If they do notice it sometime happens with almost no time left to avoid hitting me.

PLEASE INSTALL A "NO RIGHT TURN ON RED ARROW" sign at this intersection as soon as possible. The street reconfiguration work in this area has been finished for years. I have made multiple requests to the city to have this signage installed during this time. I do not understand why the city is unable to mitigate such a serious pedestrian hazard especially since the work required to do so appears to be so minimal. PLEASE FIX THIS SITUATION SOON.
